Grahame Cheney

Grahame Francis "Spike" Cheney (born April 27, 1969 ) is a retired Australian boxer . Cheney was a bronze medalist in the 1990 Commonwealth Games and a silver medalist in the 1988 Olympic Games .

Career

amateur

Cheney was Australian champion in 1987 and 1988 light welterweight (-63.5 kg) and 1990 welterweight (-67 kg).

In 1988 Cheney won the Oceanic Championships, qualifying for the 1988 Olympic Games . In the games he achieved after wins over Miguel Gonzalez, Paraguay (RSC 2nd), Ike Quartey , Ghana (5: 0), Todd Foster, USA (3: 2), and Lars Myrberg , Sweden (5: 0), the Final. In this he faced the Soviet master Vyacheslav Janowski , who beat him with 5-0 judges' votes. Cheney won the Olympic silver medal.

1989 Cheney rose to welterweight , and also won the Oceanic Championships here. At the World Championships in the same year, however, he was eliminated in the first fight against Igor Ruschnikow , Soviet Union (19: 7). After another win at the Oceanic Championships, Cheney won the bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in 1990 .

In 1991 Cheney turned pro and won the Australian welterweight championship that same year . The following year he won the " WBC international title" against Hector Hugo Vilte, Argentina . In 1993 Cheney rose to the light middleweight division and promptly lost his first professional fight against the rather lower class Alex Tui (TKO 3rd). Shortly afterwards Cheney retaliated for this defeat and also won the " IBF Pan Pacific title" (TKO 4th) against Tui . In 1994 Cheney lost a fight for the Australian championship against Leo Young Jr. and in 1996 against Viktor Baranov, Russia (TKO 5th), in the fight for the " WBC international title", whereupon he retired after 17 wins (11 KOs) in 20 Fighting ended.

Others

Since 1998, Cheney has struggled with depression and the resulting drug and alcohol abuse. He even sold his Olympic medal to buy drugs, but the community of Lithgow bought it back for him.
