( Simon , 1891)

Grammostola pulchripes is a species of tarantula that is commonin Paraguay and Argentina .

features

The basic color of the spider is black with brown to ocher-colored longer hair; so it looks brown-black overall. Depending on the population, it has beige to gold stripes on its patella, which is why it is sometimes referred to as the "gold knee tarantula" in the pet trade.

The species belongs to the so-called " bombardier spiders ". It has removable stinging hairs on the second half of the abdomen, which are used to line the living tubes and also offer protection from predators. In the event of danger, the spider strips off its hair with its hind legs. The stinging hairs are very fine and dense. Refraction makes them appear very metallic.

The specimens described by Schmidt and Bullmer in spring 2001 are males with a body length of four centimeters. They were found in the border area between Argentina and Paraguay near the city of Residencia . It is believed that the females can reach a body length of up to eight centimeters.

behavior

The spider belongs to the ground-dwelling species. It digs holes in the ground, lines them with spider silk in order to carry out brood care and molting there, and in colder periods it withdraws to these caves. Adult females usually spend the rest of their lives in their den and feed on prey that pass near the den. Younger animals and males roam the ground in the warmer season and find shelter under stones, roots, pieces of bark and fallen leaves.

Systematics

In 2009, Ray Gabriel synonymized the species described by Schmidt and Bullmer in 2009 as Grammostola aureostriata with Grammostola pulchripes .
