Grammostola porteri , sometimes in German gray Chile tarantula , is a tarantula from the genus Grammostola .
habitat
Grammostola porteri is found mainly in Chile . It is used to strongly fluctuating temperatures and can also be found in the Atacama Desert . But populations can also be found in other countries in South America .
This spider is a ground dweller and looks for retreats under the surface of the earth.
Characteristics and behavior
Grammostola porteri is a quiet representative of its genus. The spider should not be irritated, however, because when alarmed, it will defend itself with its stinging hair . It reaches a body length of 6–7 cm. It grows very slowly and is not fully grown until around 6–8 years. For this, under optimal conditions, it can reach an age of more than 20 years.
The basic color is black. The underside is completely black, only the labial area is an exception and is colored red. The abdomen ( opisthosoma ) and legs are covered with long, light brown, gray or white hair.
useful information
- Since the head plate ( carapace ) is pink in both males and females, the spider was assigned to the species Grammostola rosea for a long time . In addition, it was formerly known as Graue Grammostola rosea in German-speaking countries .
- Grammostola porteri keeps hibernation . Genetic storage is present in wild-caught animals in particular, as they do not know anything different from their countries of origin. The southern winter corresponds to the months May – August.
