Gran Fondo or Granfondo is the name given to cycling marathons for hobby cyclists , so-called “ every men ”. The term comes from the Italian, "fondo" and means "perseverance".

In 1884, a 600-kilometer race was held in Italy for the first time under the name “La Gran Fondo”. At that time, distance cycling over such long distances was extremely popular because the bicycle still had to prove itself as a means of transport. “La Gran Fondo” led from Milan to Rome.

Not only does the length of a route - up to 230 kilometers - play a role, large differences in altitude are also common. Gran Fondos are available for road cyclists and mountain bikers . Often two route lengths are offered, a "Gran Fondo" and a "Medio Fondo". The term is now also used in European races. In Italy u. a. the "Granfondo La Fausto Coppi" held.

Since 2014, the UCI has been combining a series of events into a world championship for everyone with a final run. The competition was initially called the UCI World cycling Tour and has been called the UCI Gran Fondo World Series since 2016 .
