The Granada amazon ( Amazona rhodocorytha ), also known as the red-headed amazon , is a species of parrot from the subfamily of the New World parrots .

Appearance

The basic color of the plumage of this 35 centimeter Amazon species is green. The forehead and crown of this amazon species are orange-red, the reins are yellow to yellow-orange - this fletching occasionally extends to the front cheeks. The other cheek parts are pinnate in light blue. Unlike most other amazon species, the featherless eye ring in this amazon species is not white, but gray-blue, the iris is a dark, brownish orange, and the feet are gray.

distribution

The distribution area are the humid, Atlantic lowland forests in the coastal areas of Brazil from Alagoas to Rio de Janeiro . Agricultural areas or cleared areas are avoided, but the Granada Amazon also settles in the edge zones of densely closed forests. The Granada Amazon is a typical food generalist and eats fruits, seeds, nuts, berries and buds of a range of forage crops. The feeding takes place preferentially in the treetop.

The Granada Amazon population has declined dramatically since Europeans first colonized the South American continent. Today the species only lives in fragments of its former range.

Systematics

Some authors list the Granada Amazon as a subspecies of the closely related Dufresnesian Amazon (Amazona dufresniana). However, this classification is controversial in the professional world. The Granada amazon possibly forms a superspecies together with the Dufresnes and the red-tailed amazon (Amazona brasiliensis).
