Grand Chalet
The Grand Chalet in the Vaudois community of Rossinière is the largest wooden house in Switzerland .
It was built between 1752 and 1756 by the master carpenter Joseph Geneyne for Jean-David Henchoz and was initially called Grande Maison . The building has a floor area of 500 m², five floors and 113 windows and is covered with a half-hip roof. The facade is richly decorated and has a dedication painted with around 2800 letters. It was extensively restored in 1852 when it was converted into a hotel . At the same time, the building was renamed Grand Chalet . The building remained in the possession of the Henchoz family until 1875.
In 1976 the painter Balthasar Klossowski von Rola (known as Balthus ) bought the house and lived there with his wife, Countess Setsuko, until his death in February 2001.
