Grand River Transit (GRT) is the largest transportation company for the Waterloo , Ontario , Canada area . It operates daily bus services in the region, mainly in the cities of Kitchener , Waterloo and Cambridge , as well as the Ion rapid transit local transit system , which started operations on June 21, 2019. It was named for the Grand River that flows through the region; The name is also reminiscent of the Grand River Railway , a former electric railway that served the area in the early twentieth century. GRT is a member of the Canadian Urban Transit Association .

Grand River Transit has more than 250 buses and 35 MobilityPLUS vehicles in its fleet. The fleet consists of a mix of Nova Bus LFS buses and New Flyer Industries XD-40 buses. For the ion light rail, GRT has fourteen Flexity Freedom LRVs .

GRT's MobilityPLUS service transports people with reduced mobility in small buses. Individuals registered with MobilityPLUS can pre-book trips within the Cambridge, Kitchener and Waterloo city limits.
