Clive Talbot Jaffray

Clive Talbot Jaffray (born July 1, 1865 in Berlin, Ontario ; died November 15, 1956 in Minneapolis ) was a Canadian - American banker and railroad manager. He was President of the First National Bank of Minneapolis and the Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie Railway (Soo Line).

Life

Clive T. Jaffray initially worked at the Merchants Bank of Canada in Waterloo, Ontario . In 1885 he moved to his brother Robert in Chicago and worked in publishing. In 1887 he began working for the Northwestern National Bank in Minneapolis. In 1895 he moved to the First National Bank of Minneapolis and became director of this bank on January 11, 1898. In 1917 he became president of the First National Bank. After the unexpected death of George Ray Huntington in 1923 he moved to the head of Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie Railway (company director since 1922). At the same time he gave up his job as President of the bank. He remained in this position until August 31, 1937. Immediately after his departure, the company went into bankruptcy administration due to the global economic crisis and some poor harvests. Jaffray remained chairman of the board of the railway company until 1944. He was also president of the Wisconsin Central Railway subsidiary in administration from 1924 to 1944 .

In 1924 he was chairman of the Agriculture Credite Corporation, which supported agriculture. In 1929 he was also Chairman of the Board of the newly founded banking holding First National Stock Corporation . From 1933 to 1941 he was president of this company. And then he was again Chairman of the Board until 1949. During this time he managed to get the bank through the difficult time of the global economic crisis.

He also served on the boards of American Radiator Company, Canadian Pacific Railway, Electric Machinery Manufacturing Company, Twin City Rapid Transit Company, Northwestern National Life Insurance, Northwestern Fire and Marine Insurance Company, Pillsbury Mills Inc., Title Insurance Company.

Clive T. Jaffray was an active golfer and co-founder of the Minikahda Glofclub. He was inducted into the Minnesota Golf Hall of Fame.

Jaffray was married to Madeleine Palmer (1862-1954). The couple had three sons.
