Grandmaster Caz

Grandmaster Caz (born April 18, 1961 in the Bronx ; real name Curtis Fisher ) is an American MC , rapper , songwriter and DJ . He is one of the hip-hop -Künstlern the first hour and is the first of the genre, who acted at the same time as a DJ and MC. He is currently also working as a tourist guide for Hush Hip Hop Tours , a company that guides those interested in places that are important for hip hop history. He is also a member of the Universal Federation for the Preservation of Hip Hop Culture .

Through the song Rapper's Delight , which is now considered the first internationally successful single in the hip-hop genre, he indirectly gained greater fame because he wrote the lyrics of Big Bank Hanks' part, which - albeit involuntarily - made him the first ghostwriter in the history of hip-hop.

biography

Caz was born and raised in the Bronx. Hip-Hop began in the 1970s as party events in the blocks of flats in the Bronx, so Caz first took part in a block party by Kool DJ Herc , the "forefather" of the hip-hop genre, in 1973. Inspired by Kool DJ Herc, after getting the necessary equipment, Caz started to DJ and called himself Casanova Fly .

He later formed a team with JDL, together they called themselves Notorious Two. During this time he started rapping in addition to his work as a DJ. Between 1978 and 1979, Caz and JDL joined the Cold Crush Brothers, and since then he has only appeared as a rapper and MC.

With the Cold Crush Brothers, Caz produced several singles for the Tuff City label in the early 1980s and, with his group, was one of the hottest live rap bands in New York before the Run DMC era. In the late 1980s, Caz returned to his solo career and released a few records, all of which met with little response. His last studio album was released in 2008.

The Big Bank Hank Controversy

Big Bank Hank, who made his breakthrough with the Sugar Hill Gang and whose song Rapper's Delight , had actually borrowed the raps of his part from Grandmaster Caz, which were in his notebook. As Caz revealed, one day and shortly before the song was released, Big Bank Hank visited Caz and asked if he could borrow a notebook from him that had lyrics by Caz in it. Since Big Bank Hank was the manager of Grandmaster Caz at the time, he said yes. According to Caz, Big Bank Hank took over the lyrics that were in his notebook. This becomes clear, for example, at the beginning of the part that begins with “Check it out, I'm the CASA, the NOVA, and the rest is FLY” (Grandmaster Caz used, as already mentioned in the section “Biography”, in his Casanova Fly as a pseudonym). When confronted with this accusation, Big Bank told Hank that although he could understand Caz's displeasure, he and Caz wrote the lyrics together.

In 2000, Caz released the single MC Delight , in which he once again made it clear that he wrote Big Bank Hanks lyrics for Rapper's Delight , and that he never received thanks or similar appreciation for it. When Big Bank Hank died of cancer on November 11, 2014, Grandmaster Caz made an official statement on November 19 of the same year on the blog cuepoint , in which he made his peace with Big Bank Hank.

Appreciation

1998 Grandmaster Caz was in Blaze Magazine in the "50 MCs of all time list of top" elected to eleventh place. He was also inducted into the Technics DJ Hall of Fame in 1999 . In June 2008 he received a sign on the Bronx Walk of Fame .
