Grandtully Castle
Grandtully Castle is a tower house near the Scottish village of Grandtully in the Council Area Perth and Kinross . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.
history
Grandtully Castle goes back to a small fortification that was built on the site around the year 1400. A charter from 1414 certifies property to a Laird family. Around 1525 the defense tower was rebuilt as a Tower House, which at that time had an L-shaped floor plan. Grandtully Castle was redesigned in 1626 and substantially expanded between 1893 and 1896. Leadbetter and Fairley are responsible for planning the measure . Robert Lorimer designed the iron gate made in 1895. Further proposed additions by Lorimer in 1901 were not carried out.
description
The three- to four-story Tower House is largely isolated near the scattered settlement of Grandtully. Grandtully Castle has had a Z-shaped floor plan since it was expanded in the late 19th century. Its masonry is made of quarry stone . One stair tower rises from an interior corner, while a second protrudes from one edge of the building. The roofs and drag dormer windows are covered with slate.
