The Spiro Hill ( Spanish Monte Spiro or Cerro Sudeste for southeast hill , in the United Kingdom Strachan Hill, in Chile Cerro Ariel ) is a 120  m (according to the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee 125  m ) high hill on Nelson Island in the archipelago South Shetland Islands . It rises at the head of Edgell Bay .

Scientists on an Argentine Antarctic expedition carried out from 1952 to 1953 named him after Miguel Samuel Spiro, a Greek-born protagonist of the Argentine War of Independence, who died in 1814 when his ship was blown up before it could fall into enemy hands. The US Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names translated this designation into English in 1965 in an adapted form. The name given in 1962 by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee is John Strachan from Edinburgh , co-owner of the ship Brigg Jane of the British navigator James Weddell . The Chilean name honors Ariel Gallardo, oceanographer on the Chilean Antarctic Expedition in 1970.
