The Granite Pillars ( English for granite columns ) are a striking ice-free rock formation in the Antarctic Ross Dependency . In the Queen Alexandra chain , it rises 3 km east of Mount Ida on the west side of the Beardmore Glacier .

The rock formation was discovered by participants in the Nimrod expedition (1907-1909) of the British polar explorer Ernest Shackleton . It was initially called Cathedral Rocks , which was later changed to its current name to avoid confusion with a rock formation of the same name in the Royal Society Range in Victoria Land.
