features

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is 55 to 70 millimeters. There is no sexual dimorphism between the sexes . Both sexes have the same drawing elements. The forewings are slightly curved and form a strong point at the apex . At the anal angle of the hind wings there is a long black, pointed tail process. The basic color of the upper sides of the wings is yellow-green to blue-green. The basic color is interrupted several times by narrow black bands between the apex and the cell . The hem of all wings is black. The strong hyalinity of the wings is typical of the species . In English usage, the species is known as Glassy Bluebottle (glass blue bottle). On the underside, the colors and drawings on the upper sides shine through. In addition, some reddish spots can be seen in the basal and submarginal regions .

Caterpillar

The leaves of the camphor tree are a food of the caterpillars

Adult caterpillars are predominantly green in color, thickened at the fifth body segment and tapering towards the end. To deter predators, they are able to turn out a yellowish osmaterium . The caterpillars feed on the leaves of the camphor tree ( Cinnamomum camphora ) as well as Magnolia × alba , Machilus odoratissima or Persea thunbergii .

Doll

The pupa has an elongated shape, is predominantly green in color, shows some yellow vertical stripes and has horn-like tips on the head. It is attached to branches or leaves as a belt doll .

Similar species

Graphium sarpedon differs primarily in the much wider black border area of all wing pairs as well as the only slightly transparent wings and the only hinted at tail processes.

Distribution, subspecies and habitat

The species occurs with the following subspecies in Southeast Asia:

Graphium cloanthus inhabits deciduous forests at altitudes between 500 and 1800 meters.

Way of life

Two moths suckling on moist soil

The moths fly in several generations a year, mainly in the months of March and April as well as July and August. While the females visit flowers to take in nectar, the males prefer to suckle, sometimes in numbers on the ground at damp places in the earth, in order to take in liquids and minerals. To do this, they suck up liquid from the floor with their long suction trunks, from which they filter minerals. In doing so, they pump water through their bodies and expel the excess from the anus, which removes further minerals from the soil, which can then also be absorbed.
