List of apple varieties |
The French gray reindeer is an old variety of the cultivated apple ( Malus domestica ), which belongs to the group of the reindeer .
description
The medium-sized apples are round, flattened, often built somewhat irregularly and have a green, later yellow base color with a cloudy red overcolour on the sunny side. The skin is dry and rough and has extensive brown rust . The flesh is from whitish-yellow to whitish-green in color and tends to quickly turn brown on contact with air. It is juicy, crumbly and quickly turns floury if stored incorrectly. The fruits are ripe for picking in October and should be left on the tree as long as possible. They are ready to eat from December to March, but under suitable conditions can also be stored until the end of spring.
use
The tree grows strongly and forms wide treetops. Furthermore, it demands moist and nutrient-rich locations. Some sources mention that the tree prefers warm locations, but according to other sources it is also suitable for growing at higher altitudes, if possible in sheltered locations. The tree blooms mid-early. The tree has a low susceptibility to scab and fruit tree cancer . The yield is alternating. The variety is not suitable as a pollinator. It has not been adequately researched whether the tree is also triploid .
The variety can be used as an industrial apple , table apple and for making brandy .
Breeds and History
The origin of the variety is not fully understood. It may be identical to the Damason Renette variety. Some sources give the origin of the 12th century in France to - by which they would be one of the oldest known apple varieties. The cultivation of the variety in the French monastery of Morimond in the 16th century is proven . The variety is very common in Rhineland-Palatinate and was first documented in 1781.
