The gray leaf beetle ( Charagmus griseus , Syn . : Sitona griseus ) is a beetle from the family of weevils (Curculionidae). Alternative names are the common lupine leaf beetle and the great gray leaf weevil .
features
The weevils are 5.5–10 mm long. The rostrum (trunk) is longer and narrower than that of the similar representatives of the genus Sitona . The pronotum is wider than the head and eyes. A special feature of the gray scarab beetle is the color contrast between the brownish top and the white bottom.
distribution
The beetle species is widespread in Europe. The species is also represented in the British Isles . In the south, the distribution area extends to North Africa and the Middle East.
Way of life
The beetles can be found on broom broom ( Sarothamnus scoparius ), on grouse ( Ononis ) and on various lupine species ( Lupinus ), which are their host plants. The wintering adult beetles can be observed from April. The larvae develop in the root system of the host plants. The new generation of beetles appear in mid-July. The beetles cause damage in lupine fields, especially by eating their leaves.
