description

Illustration of the shrubby restraint ( Ononis fruticosa )

Appearance and leaves

In Ononis TYPES is rarely annual or perennial mostly herbaceous plants , sometimes small shrubs . The aboveground parts of the plant are often covered with glandular to sticky hair, which is the exception with legumes .

The alternate leaves are stalked. The leaf blades are usually three-part. Of the serrated leaflets, the middle one is mostly petiolate and the side sessile. The leaf blade rarely consists of only one partial leaf or there are even more than just a pair of lateral partial leaves. The two stipules are fused with the petioles.

Inflorescences and flowers

In many species the flowers are single or up to three in the leaf axils, but there can also be distinct terminal, racemose or paniculate inflorescences , which are not as compact as in many types of clover. Bracts and bracts are tiny or missing. The flowers are sessile or have a long stalk.

The hermaphrodite flowers are zygomorphic and five-fold with a double flower envelope . The five unequal sepals are fused. The flowers petals are usually yellow, sometimes red, pink to purple or whitish. The flags are nailed. The shuttles are narrowed like a beak. There are ten stamens . All stamens are fused with tubes. The single linear-elongated or egg-shaped carpel contains two to many ovules .

Fruits and seeds

The legume contains few or many seeds. The kidney-shaped seeds have a smooth or dotted surface.

Site conditions

The Central European Ononis species grow mainly in dry places such as semi-arid grass or dry grass . They can also cope with moderately poor soils .

Systematics and distribution

The genus Ononis was established in 1753 by Carl von Linné in Species Plantarum . The diagnosis in Genera Plantarum also belongs to the Protolog . Type species is Ononis spinosa L. The botanical genus name Ononis is derived from the Greek word ónos for donkey. Synonyms for Ononis L. are Bugranopsis Pomel and Passaea Adans.

The genus Ononis belongs to the tribe Trifolieae in the subfamily Faboideae within the family of the Fabaceae .

The genus Ononis is widespread in the Mediterranean region from Europe to North Africa to Asia Minor , in western Asia and Ethiopia. The center of diversity is in the western Mediterranean with about 50 species occurring in Morocco, about 40 species in Spain and about 31 species in Algeria, and about 10 to 20 species in the other floristic territories of the Mediterranean. Only five species occur in the Alpine region, further north only two or three species. Only the Spiny rest harrow ( Ononis spinosa subsp. Spinosa ) and the Restharrow ( Ononis spinosa subsp. Maritima ) come in larger numbers of individuals in Central Europe before, but also Bocks-Hauhechel ( Ononis spinosa subsp. Hircina ) Mont-Cenis Hauhechel ( Ononis cristata ), shrubby restraint ( Ononis fruticosa ), yellow restoration ( Ononis natrix ) and the round-leaved restoration ( Ononis rotundifolia ).
