The Aladağlar Mountains , also known as Antitaurus or Anti-Taurus Mountains , are a mountain region in the Taurus belt southeast of Niğde .

Here is the densest collection of mountains over 3000 meters high in the Central Taurus. In addition, the Aladağlar Mountains have been a national park since 1995 and are therefore the only ones in the entire Taurus Mountains .

Origin and geology

The Aladağlar Mountains are part of the Taurus Mountains, which in turn is part of the Alpidian mountain belt . Since the beginning of the Upper Cretaceous around 100 million years ago, the collision of the northeastern African continental plate with the Eurasian plate led to the unfolding of the Alpine mountains, such as the Taurus. The Aladağlar Mountains occupy a special position because they are in a range of many shear stresses . It mainly consists of Mesozoic limestone , metamorphic rocks and volcanic products such as gabbro and pyroxenite , which were spectacularly unfolded. The region is still tectonically active today , as demonstrated by numerous earthquakes. Erciyes Dağı, 75 km to the north, and Hasan Dağı , 85 km to the north-west, are just two of the many relics of a volcanically extremely active epoch that ended around 10,000 years ago. The Aladağlar are criss-crossed by numerous fractures and show forms of a Pleistocene glaciation.

Mesoclimate

The climate of the Aladağlar Mountains is characterized by extreme temperatures. It's very hot in summer. The winters are cold and snowy. The highest areas of Aladağlar are covered with snow all year round. The temperature difference between day and night ranges from freezing point at night to 30 ° C during the day.

Flora and fauna

Up to the vegetation-free alpine zone you can find various types of pine and occasional cedar trees. Numerous animals have an undisturbed natural habitat here. Foxes, martens, goats, lynxes, bears and wolves are among the local residents.

tourism

The Aladağlar are open to mountaineers. The first ascent was made by the German Georg Kühne in 1927. The Yedigöller (Seven Lakes), which are a popular destination for multi-day tours, are located at an altitude of around 3,100 m . The landscape around the Aladağlar is characterized by karst forms such as sinkholes , poljes and waterfalls , which are attractive for tourists, but hardly developed. Most of the visitors come from Adana, Kayseri or Niğde.
