The Grazer Viertel , also known as Gratzer Viertel in literature, was an Austrian measure of the volume of grain and was often incorrectly equated with the Wecht . The measure was already regulated in 1638 as a binding grain and fruit measure (dry goods), but also as a liquid measure for wine in Styria . The original dimensions, carved in stone, were handed over to the city council of Graz for safekeeping and for settling disputes. But it was only after the imperial decree of 1857 that it was fixed at 80.58 liters . Before it fluctuated between 79.53 liters, 80.6 liters and 79.84 liters.

  • 1 quarter of Graz = 8 dimensions = 4350 cubic inches (Austrian) = 79.495 liters
    • 1 measure = 2 miller measure
    • 1 Müllermaßl = 2 half Müllermaßl = 4 Maßschafferl

Examples of grain with size differences:

  • Beans and Turkish wheat: 1 quarter of Graz = 1.576118 Metzen (Lower Austria.)
  • Peas and millet: 1 quarter of Graz = 1.573134 Metzen (Lower Austria.)
  • Barley : 1 quarter of Graz = 1.608955 Metzen (Lower Austria.)
  • Oats : 1 quarter of Graz = 1.632836 Metzen (Lower Austria.)
  • Wheat : 1 quarter of Graz = 1.582089 Metzen (Lower Austria.)

The gupf was about 2/10 of a quarter or 17.294 liters . The plucked or heaped quarter of Graz then had 97.154 liters. In general, 5 plucked (heaped) equal to 6 crossed out Graz quarters were calculated.
