Grbavica (Sarajevo)

Grbavica ( Cyrillic  Грбавица ) is a district of the Bosnian capital Sarajevo in the municipality of Novo Sarajevo ( New Sarajevo ). The district is divided into Grbavica I and Grbavica II and is located near the districts of Čengić vila and Dolac malta on the Miljacka river .

history

Most of the apartment blocks were built in the 1950s and 1960s after World War II . During the Bosnian War , Grbavica was controlled by units of the Vojska Republike Srpske . The home of FK Željezničar Sarajevo , the Grbavica Stadium , was deliberately destroyed and set on fire by Serb forces. After the Dayton Agreement , it became part of the Federation in the Sarajevo Canton . Most of the Serbian residents then left the district.
