The Great Kei River (or Groot-Keirivier ( Afrikaans )) is a river in the South African province of Eastern Cape . It is about 320 km long and flows into the Indian Ocean at Keimond about 60 km east of East London . Its catchment area is 20,485 km².
The river is the namesake for the former homelands Transkei ("Beyond the Kei") and Ciskei ("This side of the Kei"). The Khoi word Kei means "sand".
