Great Lakes Aircraft Company

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Great Lakes Aircraft Company is an American aircraft manufacturer from Eastman , Georgia .

Detroit Aircraft founded the "Great Lakes Aircraft Corporation" in Cleveland , Ohio in 1928 and took over the Glenn L. Martin Company's facility in Cleveland. The company and the factory were only in operation for a few years, around 200 aircraft had been built there by 1932, and the factory was closed in 1936. In 1931, James Smith McDonnell worked at Great Lakes before moving to Martin and later founding the McDonnell Aircraft Corporation .

First, Detroit Aircraft TG-1 and TE-1 were built for the US Navy on behalf of the mother company. The best-known type of aircraft produced, however, is the two-seat "Sport Trainer" Great Lakes 2T-1A-2 , which achieved an outstanding reputation. Some 2T are still in operation today.

The name and type approval changed hands several times. In new foundations, in 1972 by Douglas Champlin under the name "Great Lakes Aircraft Inc", and finally in 1984 as the "Great Lakes Aircraft Company", kits and other 2T with more modern engines were produced.
