history

James Smith McDonnell was a graduate of MIT and founded JS McDonnell & Associates in Milwaukee , Wisconsin in 1928 . He wanted to produce aircraft for private use. The economic crisis of 1929 ruined his company. He found accommodation with the aircraft manufacturer Martin . In 1939 he went into business again and founded the McDonnell Aircraft Corporation, this time near St. Louis, Missouri.

During the Second World War , the company profited from arms contracts. After the war, McDonnell began developing smaller jets based on the successful FH-1 Phantom . Other successful models for the US Navy were the McDonnell F2H Banshee, McDonnell F3H Demon and McDonnell F-101 Voodoo. After the Korean War , McDonnell won a major order for the F-4 Phantom II in 1958 .

Furthermore, McDonnell got into the new rocket business. In the US space program, the company became prime contractor for the Mercury and Gemini programs .
