Impression of an A-12

The McDonnell Douglas / General Dynamics A-12 Avenger II was a program from McDonnell Douglas and General Dynamics . The goal was to develop an all-weather stealth attack aircraft for the United States Navy and the United States Marine Corps to replace the A-6 Intruder .

history

The program suffered from numerous shortcomings, including the materials provided. The Department of Defense stopped development in January 1991 because the forecast unit cost had already risen to US $ 165 million by that time . Instead, the F / A-18 Hornet was further developed and produced to become the F / A-18E / F Super Hornet .

Construction

The aircraft was planned as a flying wing design. Drawings and models show a right triangle with the cockpit at the top. Engines should be two General Electric F412-GE-D5F2 turbofans ; two AIM-120 AMRAAM and two AGM-88 HARM , plus a set of Mark 82 or precision-guided ammunition were planned as on-board weapons . In order not to impair their stealth properties, these should be transported in an internal cargo bay.
