Douglas 2229

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Douglas 2229 was the project to design a supersonic airliner from the US American manufacturer Douglas . The aim of this designated successor to the Douglas DC-8 was to transport passengers at over 3200 km / h.

The design dates back to 1959 and shows a cylindrical, pressure-ventilated fuselage with delta wings , the wing tips of which could be lowered, and canards . The wing strake reached almost the entire length of the fuselage. The horizontal stabilizer was integrated into the long-reaching wing, the vertical stabilizer had a fin and was heavily swept. The bow section, which was shown as a mock-up at exhibitions, had a movable windshield that extended out of the bow at high speeds and covered the forward cockpit windows. The air intake to the engines was largely movable in order to be able to provide the engines with sufficient combustion air at all flight speeds and altitudes. There was no execution.
