The Grebbeberg near Rhenen in the Dutch province of Utrecht is a 52 m NAP high wooded hill that forms the southeastern point of the Utrecht Ridge ( Utrechtse Heuvelrug ), a moraine. Due to its strategic location with a view of the Lower Rhine and the Betuwe , this hill is historically very important. The Grebbelinie was built here in the 18th century . The hill is known from the Battle of Grebbeberg in May 1940. There is a military cemetery on the hilltop where over 850 Dutch soldiers were buried.
The slope on the east side is also popular with athletes. With a maximum ascent of 7% and an incline of more than 5% over half a kilometer, it is one of the more difficult slopes of the Heuvelrug. The west side (over a hundred meters) does not exceed 3% and is much less difficult to climb.
