Named after | Gioacchino Greco |
The Greco Defense , named after Gioacchino Greco , is a chess opening that is one of the open games .
It starts with the trains:
- 1. e2 – e4 e7 – e5
- 2. Ng1 – f3 Qd8 – f6 ?!
Of the many possibilities available to Black to protect the e5 pawn, 2.… Qd8 – f6 is considered a weaker choice. The queen is therefore developed too early with this move and takes the king's knight's natural development field on f6 . This type of defense of the e5-pawn counts alongside 2.… Bf8 – d6 ?! and 2.… f7 – f6? ( Damiano's defense ) as a weaker black continuation, although there is no compelling rebuttal. The advantage of white lies in the better development possibilities for his pieces. The better moves for Black are 2.… Nb8 – c6 (with a transition to the four knights game , Scottish game , Italian game or Spanish game ); 2.… d7 – d6 ( Philidor defense ) or the counterattack 2.… Ng8 – f6 ( Russian defense ).
- 3. Bf1-c4 Qf6-g6
- 4. 0-0 Qg6xe4
- 5. Bc4xf7 + (after ... Ke8xf7 follows 6. Nf3 – g5 + along with Ng5xe4 with queen loss) Black now has the choice between Ke8 – d8 or Ke8 – e7 .
