The Green Party of New Brunswick is a political party in the Canadian province of New Brunswick . It is close to the Green Party of Canada , but the two green parties are organizationally independent of each other. The party was founded in 2008 and has been represented in the New Brunswick Legislative Assembly since 2014 . Since the elections in September 2018, it has three MPs in the provincial parliament.

history

While the Green Party at the Canadian federal level was founded in 1983, promoted by the success of the Greens in Germany , the Green Party of New Brunswick, launched in November 2008, was the last to be established in a province. The main themes of the party are sustainability , renewable energies , the containment of air pollution , water protection and the promotion of regional food .

The first official chairman of the Green Party of New Brunswick was Jack MacDougall in September 2009. MacDougall resigned in September 2011 after his leadership failed to get into the provincial parliament in the 2010 election. David Coon was elected as his successor in September 2012 .

Coon, previously considered the most prominent environmentalist in New Brunswick, won the first seat for his party in the Fredericton South constituency in the September 2014 election to the New Brunswick Legislative Assembly . Four years later, the Greens tripled the number of their seats thanks to the successes of Kevin Arseneau in Kent North and Megan Mitton in Memramcook-Tantramar , who each opposed the candidates of the New Brunswick Liberal Association, which had previously been victorious in these constituencies and until then also ruled at the provincial level enforced.
