Greenpilot - The page for Science & Life (also spelled: GREENPILOT ) was a virtual specialist library that provides specialist information on the Internet in the fields of nutrition , the environment and agriculture in an Internet portal under a uniform interface for research . The offer was operated by the German Central Library for Medicine (ZB MED), where the associated subjects are also looked after as special collection areas as part of a DFG project. The portal has now opened up in Livivo .

Goal setting

The offer could be taken up by everyone. The portal made subject-related databases, library catalogs and websites accessible and made them accessible under a uniform web interface.

Technical basis

The portal software was developed by ZB MED in Perl itself.

The search function integrated in it was based on a technical solution that was developed by Averbis GmbH and traded under the product name "Averbis Search Platform". Functionally, it was a subject-specific search engine technology that focused on the semantic linking of search terms using defined vocabularies. The research results were generated from a search index.

In addition, there was the option of performing a meta search for other databases not included in the index with a further click. This research was not based on a common search index, but on the individual feedback from the individual databases.

Due to the different options for index search and metasearch, it was not possible to fully integrate them into the user interface.

The search mask could be integrated into other websites.

Content

Greenpilot brought together a number of different sources under a uniform search interface, including national and international specialist databases, catalogs of national special libraries, full texts from freely available specialist journals and information from around 1,000 subject-specific websites. In addition to the OPACs of the ZB MED, other catalogs from institutes and universities as well as the catalogs of the joint library network GBV and the German Central Library for Economic Sciences (ZBW) could be queried during a search . Bibliographical databases were also available , in particular MEDLINE , ELFIS and UNFORDAT / ULIDAT. A link to the Electronic Journal Library EZB for access to full texts and the OPAC of the Technical Information Library TIB existed only in the meta search.

A simple and an advanced search were available. Proven media could be ordered from the ZB MED document delivery service. Full texts were available online via the electronic journal library.

The users could set up their own account free of charge in order to personalize their operation ( My Greenpilot ). In this way, an overview of the document orders and the electronic management of customer data was available.

Award

In 2009, Greenpilot was named a “selected location” in the Germany - Land of Ideas competition .

Others

In order to get in contact with the users, Greenpilot operated accounts on social networks .
