The Greer Spring is a karst spring in the state of Missouri in the United States .

description

The source is located in Oregon County north of Greer . It is located in the southeastern part of the Ozark Mountains in the Mark Twain National Forrest . With an average discharge of 10,000 l / s, the spring is one of the strongest springs in the USA and the second largest in the Ozark Mountains. The Greer Spring was founded in 1980 as a National Natural Landmark ( natural monument shown).

Greer Springs outflow

Greer Spring lies at the bottom of a narrow gorge. There the water of the main spring rises from a cave portal. The outflowing source river, the Greer Spring Branch , then runs between moss-covered rocks, down a steep gorge in the deciduous forest and drops about 20 meters in altitude to its confluence with the Eleven Point River after 1.9 km . Leisure activities such as boating are guaranteed on the source river, even in the dry season. The large amount of cold spring water transforms the Eleven Point River into a cold river stream for several kilometers downstream. The cold spring water also creates ideal conditions for trout . Greer Spring is arguably the most pristine major spring in the Ozarks. There is a trail parking lot on Missouri State Route 19 to visit the spring .

history

The first flour mill was built on the headwaters by Captain Samuel Greer in 1859. He was the namesake for the source. The mill was destroyed during the American Civil War and later rebuilt. Between 1883 and 1899 the old mill was removed to make way for a new roller mill .
