Gregory J. "Greg" Nickels (* 7. August 1955 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party from the state of Washington . He was the 51st Mayor of Seattle from January 2002 to January 2010 .

He was born in Chicago in 1955, the oldest of six children. In 1961 his family moved to Seattle , where he went to school and later studied at the University of Washington . Nickels' political career began in the late 1970s when he worked for Norm Rice , who was still on the city council at the time. Nickels stayed with Rice until 1987. That same year he was elected to the King County Council and stayed there for the next 14 years. In 2001 he succeeded in asserting himself against incumbent Paul Schell in the mayoral election . Nickels took office on January 1, 2002. On November 8, 2005, he was confirmed in this office. Michael McGinn followed him in 2010.

Nickels is married and has two children, a son and a daughter.
