Gregori Chmara ( Russian Григорий Михайлович Хмара / Grigory Mikhailovich Chmara , Ukrainian Григорій Михайлович Хмара / Hryhorij Mychailowytsch Chmara ; born July 17, jul. / 29. July 1878 greg. In Poltava , Russian Empire ; † 3. February 1970 in Paris ) was a Ukrainian-born actor .
Life
Chmara, a student of Konstantin Sergejewitsch Stanislavski , began his theater career in 1910 at the Moscow Art Theater. From 1915 he worked in Russian films and took on important roles here, including the title hero in Rodion Raskolnikow .
In 1919 he emigrated to Germany and played theater with Max Reinhardt, among others . In 1922 he was able to continue his film activity and again embodied the title hero in Robert Wienes Raskolnikow . In the film adaptation of the Bible, INRI , he played Jesus Christ and then enjoyed cult status for a short time.
Soon, however, Chmara only had supporting roles, and in GW Pabst's Die joyllose Gasse he only got a brief appearance as a waiter. At that time he was Asta Nielsen's partner and can only be seen in films in which she acted.
In 1929 he took on the title role in the unsuccessful Polish film Mocny czlowick . In 1933 he went to Paris for the first time, and since 1936 he has been permanently in France. He played mainly theater here and appeared as a singer and guitarist in Parisian cabarets. In addition, he took part in films at irregular intervals until he was 90.
