Gregorio Fernández
Gregorio Fernández (* around 1576 in Sarria ; † 1636 in Valladolid ; also Gregorio Hernández ) was a carver of the Spanish late Renaissance and early Baroque periods .
Life
Fernández studied in Valladolid, where he set up his own workshop around 1605. He made a name for himself with wood-carved and painted altar figures. He did without bright colors and gold and instead chose a simple, natural-looking color scheme. Fernández 'Christ statues are of great forcefulness and charisma. His main works include the altarpieces of the Cistercian abbey of Las Huelgas Reales and the monastery of Descalzes Reales in Valladolid, the cathedral of Plasencia and the co- cathedral of Miranda do Douro in Portugal.
