Cistercian Abbey of Las Huelgas Reales (Valladolid)

The Cistercian Abbey of Las Huelgas Reales (Valladolid) is since 1282 the monastery of Cistercian nuns in Valladolid in Spain . It should not be confused with the Las Huelgas Monastery in Burgos .

history

At the end of the 13th century, Queen Maria de Molina donated a castle near Valladolid to accommodate a Cistercian convent. The monastery of Santa María la Real de Huelgas (also: Santa María de las Huelgas Reales , "Royal Monastery of Maria Ruh") was rebuilt several times (after being destroyed by fire and the effects of war), most recently in today's Calle Huelgas (or Calle Estudios) ). In 1895 (and again in 1966) the monastery founded a school ( Colegio Santa María la Real de Huelgas ) that still exists today. Attached to the monastery is a Hermandad for lay people. The church (1579–1599, with the donor's tomb and works by Gregorio Fernández and Juan de Juni ) and the monastery building (17th century) are listed as historical monuments.
