Kelly Martin

Kelly Martin (born September 16, 1914 in Lake City, California ; † unknown) was an American jazz musician ( drums ).

Martin moved to Detroit at the age of 17, where he lived with his aunt, attended high school and began playing drums during this time. After graduating from school, he played from the late 1930s a. a. with the Erskine Hawkins Orchestra, Milt Buckner , Budd Johnson , Lucky Millinder and Hot Lips Page . Around 1945 he played in the New York Onyx Club a . a. with Ben Webster and Roy Eldridge . In 1946 he worked with Billy Taylor and Tiny Grimes on recordings of Billie Holiday with ("Big Stuff"); In 1951 he made trio recordings with Billy Taylor and Aaron Bell . From 1956 he was a member of the Erroll Garner Trio for a total of ten years , heard on albums such as Close Up in Swing (1961, with Eddie Calhoun ) and Play Gershwin & Kern (Mercury, 1968). In the field of jazz he was involved in 55 recording sessions between 1943 and 1968. a. also with Bull Moose Jackson , Harry Belafonte and Larry Darnell .
