Juan de Juni or Jean de Joigny (* 1506 in Joigny , today Département Yonne , † 1577 in Valladolid ) was a French-Spanish sculptor and wood carver . His works are characterized by a high level of expressiveness and emotionality in their presentation.

Life

The artist received his training in France and Italy. Then the bishop of Porto called him to build the bishop's palace there. Around 1533 he moved to Spain, where he helped design the facade of the Hostal de San Marcos in León . In 1540 he received an order from the Bishop of Mondoñedo to help create his tomb in the Convento de San Francisco (Valladolid) .

Further work in Valladolid, Salamanca and León testify to the artist's reputation among his contemporaries. At the beginning of 1577 Juan de Juni transferred his property management to his son Isaac de Juni due to health problems. He died between April 9th ​​and 17th, 1577.

  • In the Museo Nacional de Escultura in Valladolid there is now an Antonius of Padua and in the Capilla de la Piedad belonging to the museum , a burial of Christ , which was once part of an altar that has now disappeared. This entombment is of particular quality. The realism of the depiction, the movement of the gestures and the folds and the rich color of the frame characterize this work as an important creation of the early baroque .
