Grégoire de Saint-Vincent
Grégoire de Saint-Vincent , Latin: Gregorius a Sancto Vincentio , Dutch: Gregorius van St-Vincent (born September 8, 1584 in Bruges , † January 27, 1667 in Gent ) was a Flemish mathematician and Jesuit . He is the discoverer of the decadal logarithm . However, the discovery of the decadal logarithm is partially attributed to Alphonse Antonio de Sarasa .
biography
In 1600 he studied at the Université de Douai . Saint-Vincent became a novice to the Jesuits in Rome in 1605 . At the time he was the protégé of the mathematician Christophorus Clavius and an enthusiastic admirer of Galileo Galilei . In 1612 Saint Vincent stayed in Rome until the death of Christophorus Clavius. Saint-Vincent returned to Flanders, founded the School of Mathematics of Antwerp , became a professor in Antwerp (1617-1620) and in Leuven (1621-1625). During this period he wrote his magnum opus , the opus geometricum quadraturae circuli et sectionum coni divided into ten books , published in 1647. In Antwerp he was the teacher of Jean-Charles de la Faille , a Flemish Jesuit and mathematician.
