Grenada Boys' Secondary School ( GBSS ; formerly St. George's Grammar School ) is a secondary school in Grenada . It is one of the oldest high schools on the island.
history
The Grenada Boys' Secondary School opened on February 2, 1885, when it was still a Grammar School . The premises were located in Mrs. Gray's premises on Hospital Street (the current location of the First Caribbean International Bank on Church Street ) in St. George’s . At the beginning the school had 10 male students.
From 1910 to 1911 the school was restructured and renamed Grenada Boys' Secondary School. at the same time she moved to Melville Street, where the Police Barracks are now . The new premises were opened on September 18, 1911 with a student body of 23 boys. In May 1946 the school was relocated again to Tanteen in Wooden Barracks, which had previously housed the Windward Island battalion for World War II . The Wooden Barracks were destroyed by Hurricane Ivan in 2004. The school again suffered severe devastation from two fires in April and June 2005. The auditorium was renewed through sponsorship from Digicel in 2005 and a new school building was carried out from 2006 to 2008. The government financed this with the help of the World Bank .
The GBSS has been primarily a school for boys throughout its history. However, there are some co-educational approaches. Girls are now allowed to attend the sixth form (A-level). From 1982, at the time of the People's Revolutionary Government , girls were already admitted from Form I (until 1987). However, this experiment ended again in 1991.
The school now has over 830 male students. The teaching staff consists of the principal, 50 teachers and two counselors. The school colors are distributed according to “houses”: Archer Blue, Hughes Green, Baptiste Yellow, Mcguire Red.
