Sir Paul Scoon takes over the leadership of a provisional government in Grenada after the 1983 invasion

Sir Paul Scoon GCMG , GCVO , OBE (born July 4, 1935 in Gouyave , Grenada , † September 2, 2013 in St Paul's , Grenada) was a Grenadian politician . From 1978 to 1992 he was governor general of Grenada.

Life

Scoon attended St John's Anglican School and Grenada Boy's Secondary School. He completed his studies at London University with a Bachelor of Arts . He later attended the Institute of Education at the University of Leeds .

During the 1979 Revolution in Grenada, Scoon was deposed and imprisoned by the New Jewel Movement (NJM) under Maurice Bishop . Only recently had he been appointed governor general by Queen Elizabeth II under Prime Minister Eric Gairy in her capacity as head of state of the country.

Scoon was soon released and from then on saw his task in performing the duties of governor general despite the government bishop's government, which he regarded as illegal.

After the coup d'état against Bishop by members of the new government in 1983, Scoon was imprisoned again, this time by the rebels under Bernard Coard .

The US invasion of Grenada in 1983 eliminated the NJM government. The US government stated that the invasion was an express request from Scoon. Scoon, held under house arrest, was freed at the start of the invasion. Scoon used his authority as Governor General to appoint Nicholas Brathwaite as head of government until the next election.

On July 31, 1992, Scoon resigned from office.

The Queen appointed him in 1970 to the Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE), 1979 Knight Grand Cross of the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George (GCMG) and 1985 Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order (GCVO). Rotary International made him a Paul Harris Fellow in 1984 .
