The fishing village of Gouyave

With 3378 inhabitants, Gouyave is the second largest town in Grenada after the capital St. George’s . It is located on the west coast of the island and is the capital of the Saint John administrative district .

The first official name of Gouyave was Charlotte Town after Queen Charlotte , but the name was changed to Gouyave (French for guava) during the French administration, as there are many guavas in the area around the village . Later, under British administration, the name was to be changed back to Charlotte Town, but this was unsuccessful. The village has its own fire brigade, post office, various shops and several banks.

The people in this town live mostly from fishing and so Gouyave is the official capital of the fishing on Grenada and is nicknamed "The fishing town that never sleeps" (German "the fishing village that never sleeps"). In good weather, more than 30 fishing boats go out on the Caribbean Sea. The fish wealth of this region is great, among other things tuna , barracudas and king fish are caught here. The catch of a 500 kg blue marlin also attracted attention . The catch of the day is sold either in the fish market in Gouyave, in the fish market in the capital St. George’s or abroad (the main buyers are the USA).

country and people

Because of the abundance of fish, Fish Friday takes place every Friday . This takes place in the center of Gouyave and is popular with locals and holidaymakers alike. On this day two streets will be closed to public traffic and dozens of stalls will be set up.

Every year on June 29th the fisherman's birthday is celebrated in Gouyave , the festivities encompass the whole city, there is also a regatta and a public blessing of the fishing nets.

In addition to fishing, Gouyave is also known for another very important product in Grenada, nutmeg . The largest building in town, right on the beach, is home to Grenada's largest nutmeg factory, which can also be visited (hence the nickname Grenada's Isle of Spice ).
