Grenen [ ˈgʀɛːʔnən ] or Skagens Gren (Danish: gren "branch"; "Abweig") is the sandy headland northeast of the city of Skagen and forms the northern end point of the North Jutian island of Vendsyssel-Thy and thus Jutland and Denmark. The confluence of the North Sea ( Skagerrak ) and Kattegat , a popular destination, is a little southeast of the northernmost point. Because of the adverse current conditions (" choppy sea "), swimming on the beach at Grenen is prohibited.

Grenen forms the very tip of Skagens Odde , a 30-kilometer-long headland that stretches from an imaginary line between Hirtshals and Frederikshavn . This headland was formed over a period of 8,000 years and grew into one of the largest in the world.

The headland continues into the shallows of Skagens Rev , which used to pose a serious threat to shipping.

Due to current conditions, material transport and winds, new beach ridges arise , which are deposited parallel to each other on the north side of the headland, oriented approximately from northwest to southeast. The resulting strip-shaped landscape structure can be clearly seen in aerial photographs. In this way, Skagen Odde has lengthened about 2.5 kilometers to the northeast over the past 300 years. The various layers of peat that are embedded in the subsurface of the headland between beach wall horizons and that emerge in a cliff profile on the northwest coast can be dated. The dates show that the headland has grown by around 20 kilometers to the northeast over the past 6,000 years. This development continues and enables scientific observation. Because of this, Grenen was classified as an area of special geological interest (Danish "national geologiske inter- esteområder"). It thus enjoys a special protection status under Danish nature conservation law.

The headland is named after the Grenen Art Museum .
