The Ikel / Haynasch border crossing ( Estonian Ikla piiripunkt ) is a border crossing between Estonia and Latvia .

He is in the process of from Helsinki to Prague leading Via Baltica (E67) . To the north the road leads as Põhimaantee 4 via Pernau to the Estonian capital Tallinn (German Reval), to the south as Autoceļš A1 to the Latvian capital Riga . On the Estonian side is the village of Ikel (Estonian Ikla), on the Latvian side Haynasch (Latvian Ainaži).

history

The border crossing is based on an Estonian-Latvian government agreement of July 10, 1996. With the accession of Estonia and Latvia to the European Union on May 1, 2004, the customs controls at the crossing ended. Since the countries became part of the Schengen area , the other border controls were also discontinued on December 21, 2007. The facilities were then converted into a service area.
