Border fence between Slovenia and Croatia

Section during construction

The Slovenian government decided in November to erect a border fence on the border with Croatia during the 2015 refugee crisis in Europe . The fence, which was initially made of NATO wire , was replaced in places by a 3 to 4 meter high border fence . Its aim is to ensure that no more unregistered migrants can enter Slovenia across the green border. During the 2015 refugee crisis, it should also make it possible to curb or stop the flow of migrants. So far (as of June 2016) barbed wire and fences have been erected over a length of 176 km or at 65 points along the border. These barriers were controversial in some places in Slovenia.

It was criticized that access to the protected border river Kolpa would be made impossible. The Kolpa is used for swimming, canoeing and rafting in summer . The emerging tourism will be damaged.

The 400-kilometer section between Slovenia and Croatia is part of the southeastern border of the Schengen area , in which people can travel freely without border controls. Several hundred thousand migrants and refugees had crossed this border in 2015 at the Sotla River ( Kozjanski Park ) and later at the Bregana border crossing . Over 171,000 refugees from Afghanistan, Syria and many other countries chose this route after Hungary closed its borders on October 16, 2015 .

The flow of refugees then split between Albania and Italy. Since then, however, migrants have tried again and again to enter Slovenia via the Kolpa. Fatal accidents caused by drowning occur again and again. Evidence of this u. a. Litter and clothing at abandoned resting places in the woods along the Kolpa.

A Slovenian law threatens fines or imprisonment of up to five years for damaging the border fence.
