The Gray River is a river in the south of the island of Newfoundland in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador .

River course

The Gray River flows below the dam of Meelpaeg Lake about 70 km in a predominantly south-south-west direction to the south coast of the island and finally flows into the upper end of the north -east arm of the river's estuary . The estuary has a narrow connection to the sea. There is the Gray River settlement on the west bank . As part of a larger hydropower project, the upper course of the river and a right tributary were separated from the river system. The water of the two lakes Granite Lake and Meelpaeg Lake is now diverted to the east to the Bay d'Espoir hydropower station .

Hydrology

The Gray River drains an area of about 1400 km². The mean discharge 9 km above the mouth is 56.6 m³ / s. April is the month with the highest discharge with an average of 118 m³ / s.
