Greyhound bus in Australia

Greyhound Australia is a bus company in Australia that transports both passengers and cargo. Greyhound Australia drives to 8,000 cities in Australia, 1,500 of them daily. Greyhound Australia is often thought of as part of the North American bus company Greyhound , but this is not the case. It is a purely Australian company.

Company history

The company has been in Australia for more than 100 years, making it one of the oldest bus companies in the world. The forerunner of Greyhound Australia was the bus company Pioneer Tours , which began operating in 1905 with trips to the vicinity of Melbourne . The Greyhound company started operating a bus route in Toowoomba in 1928 . Jack McCafferty took over the company in 1940, expanded and offered bus routes to all Australian states since the late 1960s. Greyhound and Pioneers merged in 1993 to become Greyhound Pioneer . The family business McCaffertys and Greyhound Pioneer merged in 2000 to form Greyhound Pioneer Australia , the largest Australian bus company. In 2003 the company was sold to the ANZ Bank and Chapman Group of Cairns and has operated under the current name Greyhound Australia since then . The former bus companies McCaffertys, Greyhound, Pioneer, Travel Coach and Bus Australia went under the name Greyhound Australia. In some cases, older buses can still be seen today in the colors of the predecessor companies, as the vehicles never got a general repainting, but this was gradually introduced when the vehicle fleet was renewed.

Company today

Greyhound Australia carried 1.3 million passengers per year in 2010 and covered 29 million kilometers of routes. There are over 1100 destinations across Australia.

In addition to serving lines, Greyhound Australia buses can be chartered for football events, school trips, wedding rides and sightseeing tours. The buses run continuously from major locations and airports to places of tourist interest. Greyhound Australia works with airlines and Australia Post for freight transport and also delivers to rural Australia. Greyhound cooperates with railway companies and other bus companies on certain routes. According to its own information, Greyhound Australia is the largest Australian bus company in the charter business.

The intercity buses that transport passengers are equipped with large panoramic windows, air conditioning, adjustable seats, a toilet and washroom and a baby changing facility.

Greyhound Australia offers sightseeing tours in Tasmania and New Zealand .

Travel recommendations

When traveling overland, discounts of 15% or more are possible on presentation of an international youth hostel card, student ID or VIP backpackers pass. The pricing is different according to graduated kilometers (Kilometer Pass) from 500 to 25,000 kilometers or can be booked with special tariffs such as Work & Travel . When traveling through Australia, the purchase of 25,000 kilometers is recommended. Seats must be reserved prior to departure; this can be done by telephone for a fee or online free of charge. The buses stop at a rest house every 5 to 7 hours for either breakfast, lunch or dinner. Eating and drinking on the buses is generally not permitted except for drinks with screw caps or food that does not leave any stains or crumbs.

As it can get very cold at night in certain areas, it is advisable to bring a sleeping bag. A light T-shirt and shorts in your luggage make sense if the air conditioning fails, as well as a pillow and travel literature.
