Gribehner ponds

The Gribehner ponds are a protected biotope near Calbe (Saale) . It is located between the Wartenberg and the Saale .

In the Middle Ages, the village of Gribehne, which is now abandoned, was located at today's biotope . With the arrival of the industrial revolution in Calbe 150 years ago, lignite was also promoted north of the city to operate steam engines ; this measure was promoted by Karl Leopold Fabian . From 1854 to around 1864 the cloth manufacturers, the Nicolai brothers, and other shareholders ran the Emma and Charlotte mines here . The systems soon had to be abandoned due to the ingress of groundwater too intensively . The earth sank into the abandoned tunnels, and the water that ran into the holes formed what is now known as the Gribehner Teiche , the area of water and swamps.
