history

The bear bull

Finds from the Bronze Age suggest that the Wartenberg was an important burial site and sanctuary for the Teutons who lived there at the time.

The Wartenberg was originally overgrown with trees and bushes before a heavily furrowed landscape formed on the eastern slope of the mountain in the 19th century due to sand and gravel mining .

Today the mountain is a popular local recreation area, which also includes a pet garden. Its attraction was the brown bear Jette , who died on the night of October 16-17, 2014.

In October 2001, a Wotanstor was built again on the Wartenberg after the old gate was destroyed in the Second World War. The gate is adorned with a head of the German god Wotan, carved from oak by the Calbens sculptor Otto Plönnies .

Bismarck Tower

One of 15 preserved Bismarck towers in Saxony-Anhalt is on the Wartenberg . It was inaugurated on March 22, 1904 in honor of Otto von Bismarck . The round tower has a diameter of 12 meters at its base with a wall thickness of 1.75 meters and a circumference of almost 40 meters; At 30 meters, it is the highest in Saxony-Anhalt. Around 1300 m³ of Glöther limestone were used for the construction .

In 1948 the VVN rededicated the tower as a VVN tower , and a memorial for the victims of fascism was set up in its vestibule . This protected the tower from decay and demolition. The centenary was celebrated on May 9, 2004 with the opening of the newly designed memorial hall and a cultural program. The ATV converter DB0WTB used by radio amateurs was located on the tower until March 2015 .

The tower is open to visitors on weekends and public holidays.
