Greek course

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Greek course is the title of a three-volume teaching work of the ancient Greek language compiled by Günther Zuntz , which was first published in 1983.

history

Zuntz left Germany in 1933 and worked at the University of Manchester after the war , where he held a professorship for Hellenistic Greek from 1963 to 1969. In the years 1948 to 1955 he developed his Greek course in English, which was not initially printed, but instead improved and completed in courses at the University of Texas at Austin. At the invitation of courses at the University of Tübingen , he prepared the German version in 1976, which was finally published in 1983 after six more years of revision. In 1991 a second, reviewed edition was published and in 1994 the English edition was published.

Textbook

In 86 lessons and an anthologion , the course offers materials and suggestions for learning the ancient Greek language as effectively as possible, without being based on a curriculum or a method. The aim of the book is to enable the learner to grasp Greek texts through immediate understanding. Therefore, the lessons consist entirely of original ancient Greek in the form of quotations or small readings from Greek literature, mainly in Attic Greek , but New Testament Greek is also dealt with, especially if it corresponds to Plato or Aristotle . The six-part anthologion offers on 30 pages sayings, customs, fables, comedy quotes and wits from Socrates and Plato.

In this way, not only the language but also the interpretation are practiced and the grammatical phenomena illustrated. The teaching work differs from classic school textbooks with artificial ancient Greek and is suitable for university use and for self-teaching within the framework of the Graecum . The three volumes of the 1983 edition are also freely available as PDFs.

The course can be worked through in ninety to one hundred lessons, provided the learner is willing to use one to two hours of private learning for each lesson. The easily comprehensible grammar section is particularly suitable for self-study and offers deep linguistic insights. Knowledge of Latin and grammar is a prerequisite.
