Grip tape on a tennis racket

The mostly complete covering of a racket handle is called a grip tape . Grips are used, for example, on tennis , badminton and squash rackets .

A grip tape is used for several reasons:

  • Avoiding blistering of the hands
  • Shock / vibration absorption or damping
  • Sweat absorption
  • Better / safer grip or better club control

Grip tapes are usually self-adhesive, about 200 cm long and between 2.5 and 3 cm wide. They are wrapped around the handle in a spiral. A distinction is made between base grips and overgrips. In general, the term grip tape means the latter.

Base grip

The base grip is already on the handle of the racket when you buy it and basically fulfills the above-mentioned points.

Overgrip

Various overgrips. The same model standing above and below.

Most athletes use an overgrip tape in addition to the base grip to achieve an even better grip. For this reason, many grip tapes are provided with a coarse structure or contouring .

Standard grip tapes consist of a layer of foam that is sealed with a non-slip and abrasion-resistant surface. These grip tapes are often available individually packaged and, in terms of length, are sufficient for each racket grip, even with a slightly tighter winding . Meanwhile, there are also Terry -Griffbänder that is offered primarily as a meter / roll. Grips are available in many different colors.
