Grigori Wassiljewitsch Soroka
Grigory Soroka , actually GW Vassiliev (Васильев), ( Russian Григорий Васильевич Сорока , * November 15 jul. / 27. November 1823 greg. In Pokrovskoe ( Tver ); † April 10 jul. / 22. April 1864 greg. Ibid ) was a Russian painter, serf and the most famous student of Alexei Venetianov .
Soroka was born into the family of the landowner Milyukov. 1842–47 he studied art with A. Wenezianow, who tried to get his release. Thereupon his owner forbade him further trips to St. Petersburg and employed him as a gardener. Far from the art scene and spiritually alone after the teacher's death, his artistic talent soon began to fade. From 1850–60 he lived in his home parish and concentrated on village churches for which he painted various icons .
Since he could not fulfill the conditions of his owner for release (serfdom reform of Alexander II of March 3, 1861), Soroka was not released. He complained but was turned away, detained for rioting and possibly flogged. He was released due to illness. He hanged himself in the bakery of the estate.
Only about 20 undated paintings by Soroka have survived today.
