Grinnell Island is an 800 m long island off the Budd coast of the East Antarctic Wilkesland . It is located in the Donovan Islands group south of Chappel Island .
Aerial photographs of the US American Operation Highjump (1946–1947) were used for initial mapping. The American polar explorer Carl R. Eklund (1909–1962) sighted them in 1957 with other members of the occupation of the Wilkes station . Eklund named her after Sheldon Wayne Grinnell (* 1928) of the United States Navy Reserve Forces , who was a doctor on Wilkes Ward in 1957.
